SUMMER GUEST FROM CALIFORNIA

Paintings and monotypes by Katherine Chang Liu at Ama Gallery

Ama Gallery is introducing Katherine Chang Liu to Finland as their summer exhibition. Her show consists mainly of abstract collages, where often subtle, figurative elements done in pencil can be traced. Katherine Chang Liu's work is like notes with many layers, picture series full of discoveries and marks, some of which can be traced back to the artist's Chinese-American cultural heritage. In contrast to the rich and detailed collages, Chang Liu paints broad, calm color compositions. She works in series, with names such as Maps, Wall Marks and Interiors.

Katherine Chang Liu studies plants, animals and urban details. The paintings, done on wooden panels, and the printed monotypes on paper show strong compositions with disciplined use of color. The artist has clearly matured and found her own way of expression. Katherine Chang Liu, based in Los Angeles, is a feminine counterpart to Tapies or Rauschenberg, and behind the collages you can catch glimpses of Kurt Schwitters, father of recycling artists.
